1. Gezellig
Starting off strong, this is one of the most important dutch words to extend your vocab. There’s no similar word or easy translation for gezellig, it’s in a league of its own. It’s used to encapsulate the cozy, pleasant and fun moments or experiences you can have. Fun day out exploring a new city or hanging with friends? Het was gezellig!
2. Ik ben niet van suiker gemaakt
Contemplating staying inside your hostel on a rainy day? Well, you’re not made of sugar! You’re not gonna melt outside. Remember this Dutch phrase to give yourself the motivation you need to go out on a rainy day.
3. Een ezel stoot zich niet twee keer aan dezelfde steen.
A donkey doesn’t hit the same boulder twice. Basically, if you’re a fool, don’t make the same mistake again. Prime example: the first time you get hit by a bike, make sure it doesn’t happen again. Otherwise, you’re a donkey!
4. Verweggistan
‘Far-away-stan’ Are you originally from a country that’s a little far away from the Netherlands? If a Dutchie asks you where you’re from, instead of being boring by just telling them straight up where you come from, tell them you’re from verweggistan. They’ll love that one for sure.
5. Lekker
An absolute staple. When you eat some bangin’ bitterballen, pickled herring, or hagelslag, be sure to describe it as lekker to any Dutchie. They’ll be real proud of you! You can even wave your hand up to your ear to make them giggle.
6. Tsjonge jonge jonge!
A very fun and versatile expression. It’s sort of the same vibe as “Mamma mia!” If your cheeky friend ever steals your joint, hit them back with a “tsjonge jonge jonge!” Maybe roll your eyes too for a dramatic effect.
7. Godvoordomme!
This exclamation is the dutch equivalent of ‘goddammit!’ If you stub your toe, eat something yucky, see something disturbing, then this is the phrase for you. Be sure to really accentuate the hard G at the start of the word to emphasise your frustration, disgust or annoyance.
8. Oh, op die fiets!
You may hear this expression used in the same manner as “oh like so!” It directly translates to “oh, on the bike.” Once a Dutchie has understood your complex travelling itinerary, they may utter this idiom.
9. Hè Hè
Have you had a long day exploring a new city? When you finally kick off your shoes and jump into bed, mutter a quick hè hè and you’re basically a local now! It’s a sigh of relief when you can finally relax.
10. Doei!
I have a feeling you can guess what this one means. When you’re saying goodbye to your new travelling friends, say doei before you embark on a new travelling journey. Maybe you’ll be travelling to verweggistan next, no one knows! And on that note, it’s time to say doei to you, because this is the end of the list.
